Milestone Foundation is a non-profit organization that was started by Joseph Loling in 2021. This was born from the passion, compassion he had to transform the lives for the less privileged, and marginalized children, and women who live in the slums of Jinja City in Uganda. Among these categories of children include orphans, abused, and neglected children most especially the isolated Karamojong’s from poor family backgrounds. These categories have suffered a great deal and the kind of life of poverty, poor healthy conditions, child illiteracy, and homes they possess leave one with tears in a heart.
Most of these marginalized groups have been neglected and are seen as those who will never change from their current poverty situation and live a more dignified life. Some people have been capitalizing on their situation to earn a living leaving them more frustrated. Although the government of Uganda and other Non- government organizations (NGOs) have given a hand to some extent, much still remains undone. These marginalized group remain almost hopeless that one day they could enjoy a better life that other middle-class Ugandans enjoy. Although Joseph stands as a testimony to such life situations, born from the humble family background with no hopes of the brighter future, and so, armed with nothing but a dream, and a burning desire to make a difference.
Milestone foundation set out on a mission to change, and rewrite the story of the marginalized, one life at a time an organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable, children and empowering disadvantaged women, channeling experiences into a force for good.
In the heart of Jinja lies Masese slum, a place where hope struggles to flourish amidst the harshest conditions. This is home to the many but most especially known for Karamojong’s, a marginalized group from the Northeastern part of Uganda, who fled their ancestral lands in search of a better life. However, what they found was a life fraught with unimaginable challenges.
Every day, this marginalized groups [especially Karamojong’s] in Masese slum wake up to a reality that most of us can hardly fathom. Most families live in makeshift shelters, often just shelters of corrugated, and dilapidated iron sheet, offering little protection from the elements. The air is thick with the stench of inadequate sanitation, where clean water is a luxury and diseases are rampant.
Tuberculosis, diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid, malaria, and other respiratory infections spread like wildfire, preying on the weak and malnourished children. Leaving alone HIV/AIDs, a big elephant in the room which has claimed lives of many adults leaving a number of Children orphaned, with their bright eyes and boundless potential, roam the dusty paths, and the whole community instead of attending school. Illiteracy rates soar as education remains a distant dream for many especially the little souls, children. Unemployment is high, and the struggle to find a stable source of income leaves families in a perpetual state of desperation forcing many adults, especially single women including children of about 5-10yrs to move and pick from the dumping sites/ pits of the city.
Despite these overwhelming adversities, there is a glimmer of hope. Milestone Foundation is dedicated to transforming the lives of these forgotten people, bringing light into the darkest corners of the community [Masese slum]. We believe that every child deserves the right to education, every woman deserves empowerment, and every family deserves a chance to thrive.
